Minenergo: Ukraine has restored half of the lost energy capacity.
Almost half of the energy capacities that were lost due to Russian attacks in 2024 have been restored by Ukraine thanks to international financial support. This was reported by the Minister of Energy Herman Halushchenko. He noted that out of 10 GW, 5 GW have been restored, mainly through the Energy Support Fund, which has accumulated over EUR 1 billion.
Halushchenko noted that the needs for assistance exceed the available resources. Energy companies have already submitted requests for funding from the Fund amounting to over 1 billion euros. To meet the urgent needs of the industry, an additional 500 million euros needs to be attracted.
Problems in the energy sector
As a result of the war, the Ukrainian energy sector has faced serious problems. In addition to destroyed generating capacities, Ukraine has lost a significant amount of its natural gas. Furthermore, the occupation of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant by Russian troops and constant attacks on other nuclear power plants pose a continuous threat to nuclear safety. Halushchenko noted that due to the shelling of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, the IAEA has repeatedly canceled the rotation of inspectors. Nevertheless, he emphasized the successful survival of the military winter thanks to cooperation with European partners.
