Estonia’s Foreign Minister Accuses Russia of Using Threats and Promises to Intimidate the West.
Estonian Foreign Minister Visits Germany for Security Talks
According to UATV: During a trip to Germany, Estonia’s top diplomat Margus Tsahkna stated that Russia is attempting to frighten Western nations by leveraging both its pledges and the fear they generate. Tsahkna held discussions with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul at the Kiel Security Conference, where they addressed the ongoing Russian aggression.
In his address, Tsahkna declared that
“for years, Putin has repeatedly fueled the West’s hope that his aggression would come to an end”. He stressed the critical role European nations must play in future negotiations, adding:
“When the time comes, we must be at the negotiating table—as a supporter of Ukraine, not as a neutral mediator”.
Urgency of Talks on Ending the War
These remarks highlight the pressing need to discuss how to end Russia’s war against Ukraine—a point also raised by French President Emmanuel Macron, who noted that “Europeans must be at the table when the end of Russia’s war against Ukraine is discussed.” The situation reflects growing unease among European leaders about regional security following Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.
The Estonian minister’s comments align with a broader European consensus on the need for active involvement in peace negotiations to achieve stability in the region. They also signal increasing European unity on security matters and support for Ukraine, which could shape future relations with Russia amid its ongoing aggression. This context is especially relevant as Western allies continue to coordinate their response to Moscow’s actions.
