Trump announces peace agreement between Rwanda and DR Congo: details of the agreements.
According to ТСН: Leaders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo signed a peace agreement in Washington with the support of U.S. President Donald Trump.
The ceremony took place at the U.S. Institute of Peace. The American leader emphasized that the United States played a crucial role in achieving these agreements.
“Today we achieve success where many others have failed”
– said Trump, greeting the presidents of DR Congo Félix Tshisekedi and Rwanda Paul Kagame for their readiness for peace. He also expressed confidence in the possibility of resolving the protracted conflict.
In addition, the United States and DR Congo signed an agreement on strategic partnership, which provides for priority access for the U.S. to minerals in the DRC.
Protracted conflict between countries
The conflict between Rwanda and DR Congo has been ongoing for many years: the countries accuse each other of supporting armed groups operating mostly in eastern DRC, which is rich in natural resources.
Earlier this year, militants seized two strategically important cities in the east of the country — Goma and Bukavu. The U.S. and Qatar helped reduce tensions.
It is also worth noting that earlier in Indian Kashmir there was a terrorist attack that killed 26 tourists. This incident led to an escalation of conflict between India and Pakistan, although it is not directly related to the events in Africa.
On May 10, after lengthy negotiations mediated by the U.S., India and Pakistan signed an agreement for an immediate ceasefire.
The agreement reached between Rwanda and DR Congo is considered an important step towards stability in a region where armed conflicts have persisted for years. The signed agreements could serve as a basis for further peace initiatives and economic cooperation between the countries to improve the situation for the local population.
