Drones Shot Down Over Romanian Territory

According to Espreso.tv: Romania reported three separate incidents where its forces destroyed Russian drones on its soil, sparking renewed concerns about regional security. These events unfolded as Russia intensified strikes on port infrastructure in Ukraine's Odesa region—a key corridor for grain shipments. For context, Romania, a NATO member, shares a border with Ukraine and has been monitoring aerial incursions near the Black Sea coast.

On July 24, 2023, a Romanian F-16 fighter shot down a Russian drone over Buzău County. The next day, July 25, 2023, at 8:30 AM, another hostile drone crashed 10 km west of Sfântu Gheorghe in Tulcea County. Then on July 26, 2023, at 10:13 AM, a third drone broke apart above Romania's territorial waters near Sulina–Chilia.

Bucharest's Response to the Incidents

Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine began, Romania has recorded 33 breaches of its airspace by Russian drones—18 of which occurred in 2026 alone. In reaction to the three downed drones, Russian Ambassador Vladimir Lipayev was summoned to Romania's Foreign Ministry on July 27, 2023, and Bucharest recalled its ambassador from Moscow for consultations. The interception cost roughly €1.5 million.

Romanian officials condemned the violations.

“This is unacceptable and inadmissible,” said Nicușor Dan.

These incidents come amid rising Ukrainian grain exports: by sea, 24.6 million tons were shipped from January to June 2026.

The downings highlight escalating military tensions in the region. As a NATO member, Romania must respond to Russian provocations, and drone debris on its soil suggests possible breaches of international norms. This could strain Kyiv–Moscow relations and undermine overall Black Sea security. In response, Romanian authorities are likely to continue strengthening defenses and coordinating with allies to protect national interests.
