Paton Bridge at Risk of Collapse, Experts Warn.
Paton Bridge in Critical Condition
According to TSN.ua: Kyiv's Paton Bridge has been in an emergency state since 2017 due to severe corrosion and structural damage. Experts are now warning of a potential collapse and urging immediate repairs. The cost of a full reconstruction is estimated to be between 300 and 500 million euros.
Opened in 1953, the bridge is now in a critical state. Corrosion has eaten away at the structure, reducing the thickness of its metal components from 14 mm to just 7 mm. As of 2025, the main support beams already show through-and-through damage, a development that has caused serious alarm among engineering specialists.
Traffic Restrictions and the Need for Reconstruction
Significant traffic restrictions are now in force on the bridge. Vehicles with an axle load exceeding 7 tons are banned, and single vehicles must not weigh more than 17 tons—clear indicators of the structure's dangerous condition.
The Paton Bridge is a vital transport link for Kyiv, making its reconstruction an urgent priority. Given the enormous cost, the questions of funding and project organization require immediate solutions. Experts are calling for swift action to prevent a potential disaster. As one of the main crossings over the Dnipro River, its failure would cause major disruption to the capital's infrastructure.
Rebuilding the bridge holds not just technical but also significant social importance for the city. It connects key districts of Kyiv, and any closure or severe restriction would heavily impact daily life and traffic flow. The restoration effort will demand not only substantial financial resources but also coordinated action from national and local authorities, alongside construction and engineering experts.
