Mobilization After 50: Who and Under What Conditions Are Called Up to the Army in 2026.
Mobilization of Men Over 50 in Ukraine
According to ТСН: In Ukraine, in January 2026, the mobilization of men over 50 years old will take place on common grounds. Citizens who have grounds for deferment or have been reserved by enterprises for work in the rear are not subject to conscription.
According to the Law on Mobilization Preparation and Mobilization, the main category of citizens subject to conscription is military liable persons aged 25 to 60 years. Thus, after reaching the age of 50, mobilization is carried out on common grounds. Upon receiving a summons, the citizen is obliged to appear at the territorial recruitment center (TRC) and undergo a military-medical commission (MMC). Only after that will a decision be made regarding his conscription.
However, it should be noted that certain features in the mobilization of men 50+ do exist. The key factors during the decision-making process remain:
- health status according to the results of the MMC;
- availability and demand for military accounting specialty;
- absence of legal grounds for deferment or reservation;
- current needs of the Armed Forces.
Thus, if a man is declared fit for military service, has no right to deferment or reservation, and possesses a demanded specialty in the army, he can be assigned to service even at the age of 59.
At the same time, the conscription of Ukrainians over 50 does not mean that they will serve on the front lines or in assault units. Such military liable persons are usually involved in support units and rear structures, where they can be maximally useful considering their age and physical condition.
It should be noted that the TRC and SCD have reported who has the right to hand out summonses to military liable persons. In addition to their employees, several categories of officials and law enforcement representatives are included in the list.
In particular, representatives of administrations and village councils are vested with the authority to notify citizens.
Thus, the new mobilization rules in Ukraine emphasize the importance of military preparation and readiness of all citizens, regardless of age. Conscription campaigns will continue according to the needs of the state, and the personal status of military liable persons will also be studied. This will allow for more effective use of resources, taking into account the experience and skills of older military liable persons. It is important that the process takes place transparently and without unnecessary misunderstandings, as the issue of national security remains on the agenda in the challenging conditions of armed conflict.
