Mobilization in Ukraine - Can Pensioners Be Drafted

In connection with the general mobilization, military conscription applies to citizens aged 18 to 60. Being a pensioner is not a reason to avoid military service, but some citizens may be exempt from conscription. The law 'On Mobilization Training and Mobilization' regulates this issue.

Draft of Pensioners

According to the law, certain categories of pensioners have the right to be exempt from service. This includes citizens aged 60 and older, people with disabilities, and those who are unfit for service for medical reasons. Pensioners caring for incapacitated family members or those with special merits before the state may also qualify for exemption. However, military pensioners can be drafted, but only in their specialty in the army.

How a Pensioner Can Be Exempt from Mobilization

To obtain an exemption from conscription, a pensioner needs to contact the military commission and the conscription service with the appropriate set of documents. The following documents are required:

  • pension certificate;
  • medical conclusions about health status;
  • documents confirming care for a disabled person;
  • other documents supporting the grounds for exemption.

A decision on exemption after verifying the documents is made by employees of the relevant services. In case of refusal, a pensioner may still be drafted into the army.

Pensioners can be exempt from military service if they meet certain criteria defined by the law 'On Mobilization Training and Mobilization'. For this, it is necessary to have the appropriate set of documents and to contact the military commission. However, it is worth remembering that in certain cases even pensioners may be drafted into military service if they have a military specialty.
