Moldova's Railway System Overhaul

According to Novyny.live: Moldova has announced a major upgrade to its railway network, which will feature a new high-speed line connecting Ungheni and the capital, Chisinau. Trains on this new route are designed to reach speeds of up to 140 km/h (87 mph). The project's feasibility study is scheduled for completion by 2026. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the country's Soviet-era infrastructure and improve regional connectivity.

The initial phase of the project involves the electrification of approximately 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) of track. The assets of the new railway structure are valued at around 1.5 billion Moldovan lei. According to Infrastructure Minister Vladimir Bolea, the technical and economic justification for the new Ungheni-Chisinau branch is planned to be finalized in 2026.

The Imperative for Railway Reform

While the state railway company, CFM, reported a profit in 2022, significant losses are forecast for 2024-2025. This financial pressure underscores the critical need for comprehensive railway reform and the adoption of new technologies to revitalize Moldova's rail transport sector.

Consequently, the new Ungheni-Chisinau railway line represents a vital step in modernizing Moldova's infrastructure, with the goal of significantly enhancing the speed and quality of rail services.

The project's successful implementation could substantially impact Moldova's economic development. Improved transport infrastructure is expected to boost trade and tourism appeal. Rail transport is a crucial component for ensuring the mobility of people and goods, as well as for integrating Moldova into the broader European transport network. Therefore, the success of this venture could serve as a key catalyst for attracting further investment into the country.
