The popularity of the keto diet as a means of losing weight
On the internet, the keto diet is gaining popularity as an effective means of losing weight.
Family doctor Mykhailo Tsyurak explained whether it is really beneficial for the body. He wrote about it on Instagram.
What is the essence of the keto diet
This diet involves a diet consisting of 75% fats, 20% proteins, and only 5% carbohydrates. With such a diet, the body will draw energy from fats, converting them into fatty acids and ketone bodies. As a result, there will be no fat deposits in the body, and weight loss will be ensured.
What is the danger of ketone bodies
Normally, the concentration of ketones in the body should be minimal for their quick utilization. When ketone bodies increase in the blood, the risk of ketosis or acetonemic syndrome increases. This syndrome is a consequence of our body's intoxication with the byproducts of fat breakdown. Symptoms of acetonemic syndrome:
- weakness;
- headache;
- vomiting;
- the smell of acetone from the mouth (reminiscent of stale apples).
Why the keto diet is harmful
The recommended ratio of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the diet for a healthy person is: 15% fats, 15% proteins, and as much as 60% carbohydrates (1:1:4). The keto diet is justified in some cases (treatment of certain forms of epilepsy, nutrition for athletes), but should not become a daily diet. Such a diet is especially contraindicated for children and people with diabetes. Such a diet can only be prescribed by a specialist with a medical degree.
Breakfast is the most important meal. Regular breakfasts help prevent overeating during the day, and are beneficial for both figure and health. Products rich in fiber are well-suited for the morning meal. In addition, it is worth consuming protein and hard cheeses.
