Over 10,000 Migratory Birds Recorded at Tuzly Estuaries on Bird Day.
Bird Day Celebration at Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park
According to Novyny.live: On Bird Day, more than 10,000 northbound migratory birds were observed at the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park. Monitoring data shows that 55 different species passed through the observation point between 6:00 AM and 8:00 AM. This event highlights the critical role of protected areas in safeguarding bird populations — some of these birds travel up to 15,000 kilometers annually during migration.
Many birds fly through without stopping, while others linger at the estuaries for one to two weeks to rest and refuel. Ornithologist Ivan Rusev noted:
“In total, over 10,000 individuals passed by us. Some fly through nonstop, while others stay on the estuaries for a week or two to regain their strength.” — Ivan Rusev
Ecological Diversity and Bird Conservation
This year, the first dolphins were also recorded at the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park, underscoring the region's rich ecological diversity. It is also worth noting that flamingos are among the vulnerable species affected by conflict, emphasizing the need to preserve natural habitats for birds.
In other significant developments, a barn owl listed in Ukraine's Red Book was released into the wild within the park, reflecting active conservation efforts. These facts demonstrate how crucial it is to protect reserve areas in order to maintain biodiversity and support migratory bird routes.
The event at the Tuzly Estuaries not only underscores the importance of nature reserves for bird migration but also points to the region's ecological stability. The convergence of such large-scale migration and bird stopovers indicates a healthy ecosystem capable of supporting diverse species. The release of a barn owl into its natural habitat represents an additional important step in preserving species diversity and combating extinction. Protecting such reserves remains critically important amid climate change and human impact.
