Union Boss Exposed as Mastermind of $8.7M Ukrainian Train Ticket Scalping Ring.
National Police Raid Targets Ticket Resale Network
According to TSN.ua: Ukraine's National Police have dismantled a long-running criminal operation that illegally resold train tickets, with the scheme's leader identified as the head of a trade union, Oleksiy Leitar. Nine individuals were arrested during the operation, three of whom have already been sentenced. Investigators report that the total damages were revised downward from 70 million to 8.7 million hryvnias following a forensic economic examination.
Decade-Long Scheme Uncovered
This ticket scalping network had been active in Ukraine for over ten years. In the first half of 2024 alone, Ukrainian Railways lost more than 70 million hryvnias due to this illicit activity. However, after a year-long investigation, the confirmed losses now stand at 8.7 million hryvnias. Nine suspects have cooperated with authorities during the probe.
According to Leitar, the organizer was the head of a local trade union branch. The special operation involved approximately 80 searches, marking a significant crackdown on organized crime in the transport sector. The scheme relied on a network of insiders, including:
- train conductors
- train chiefs
- other accomplices facilitating the illegal resale of tickets
Thanks to the National Police's efforts, the situation regarding ticket scalping is expected to improve, allowing citizens greater access to legitimate transport services.
This operation signals a renewed push by law enforcement to combat organized crime and corruption in Ukraine.
Exposing this criminal ticket resale scheme is a crucial step not only for recovering damages but also for rebuilding public trust in the transportation system. Further police actions are likely to deter similar crimes in the future and promote fair competition in the transport industry.
