Massive Strike on Kyiv on July 2

According to Novyny.live: In the early hours of July 2, Ukraine's Air Force reported one of the most significant Russian assaults on the capital to date. The attack involved 28 ballistic missiles of various types, alongside new models of attack drones. Among the weapons deployed were Iskander-M and Zircon missiles, as well as S-400 surface-to-air missiles repurposed for ground attack.

Ukrainian Air Defense Proves Highly Effective

Ukraine's air defense system performed remarkably well during this assault. Nearly 100% of cruise missiles were intercepted, and over 90% of conventional drones were shot down. According to Air Force spokesperson Yuriy Ihnat,

“Only Patriot missile systems have the capability to intercept such advanced weaponry” - Yuriy Ihnat

This performance highlights a shift in Russia's drone warfare tactics.

Russia has dubbed the new missiles used in the attack 'Banderolyas'. Ihnat commented:

“This is yet another challenge that we must respond to, of course” - Yuriy Ihnat

He added that 'naturally, this burns through the resources I just mentioned.' The first interception of a ballistic target using a domestically produced system is expected by the end of 2026, underscoring the urgent need for continued upgrades to Ukraine's air defense capabilities.

This assault marks the highest number of ballistic missiles ever launched against Kyiv in a single attack and demonstrates Russia's evolving use of unmanned aerial vehicles. Ukraine continues to strengthen its defensive posture in response to these growing threats.

The event highlights the escalating military conflict between Ukraine and Russia, as both sides adapt their strategies. The strong performance of Ukraine's air defense shows the country's ability to meet new challenges, but the need for constant improvement remains critical. The intensity of these strikes may indicate Russia's intent to increase pressure, requiring Ukraine to maintain heightened readiness and rely on continued support from international allies.
