Three Drones Shot Down After Russian UAV Violates Romanian Airspace; Ambassador Summoned.
Russian Drone Incursion into Romanian Airspace
According to Espreso.tv: Between July 24 and 26, Romanian forces detected and destroyed three unmanned aerial vehicles after a Russian drone breached the country's airspace. In response to these repeated violations, Romania summoned the Russian ambassador for a diplomatic protest.
Details of the Drone Interceptions
On the morning of July 27, radar systems spotted an aerial target east of Sulina. A RO-Alert warning was issued at 8:47 AM, and two F-16 fighters from the 86th Air Base in Fetesti were scrambled at 8:53 AM. The target briefly entered Romanian airspace before being intercepted. According to Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Russian diplomat was called in for incidents occurring from July 24 to July 26 due to repeated airspace breaches.
Romanian military forces used an F-16 fighter to shoot down a drone for the first time on July 24. The following day, July 25, the Romanian Air Force downed another drone. On July 26, President Nicusor Dan announced the third shootdown in three days. Oana Tsoyu, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson, stated:
"This same measure has been applied previously," said Oana Tsoyu, Romanian Foreign Ministry spokesperson.
She added that "Romania has already invoked Article 3 of the NATO Charter."
These events underscore growing regional tensions and emphasize the importance of safeguarding Romania's airspace. The increasing frequency of airspace violations could lead to further escalation, requiring robust responses from Romania and its allies. Romania, a NATO member bordering Ukraine, has faced rising drone incursions amid the ongoing war. The diplomatic reactions also reflect the country's commitment to defending its security interests in Europe.
