NATO is creating the largest base in Europe in Romania: details of the strategic project

According to inkorr.com: The Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base in Romania may become NATO's largest strategic base in Europe, housing more troops than previously planned. According to the Romanian TV channel Digi24, the base will be able to accommodate up to 20,000 soldiers instead of the planned 10,000.

In addition to the main contingent of 10,000 troops, the base will be able to temporarily host another 10,000 soldiers in case of a worsening situation with Russia or threats to NATO countries. It will become one of the largest support centers for Ukraine and will have warehouses for storing military aid, including missiles, ammunition, and armored vehicles.

The modernization of the Mihail Kogălniceanu base will cost 2.5 billion euros, making it one of the most expensive projects of the Romanian army. Romania plans to receive 400 million euros from European Commission funds for the implementation of this project.

Strategic Location and Future Plans

If everything goes according to plan, by 2040 the Mihail Kogălniceanu base will become the largest airbase in Europe, surpassing the size of the German Ramstein base. Recently, three F-16 fighters arrived at this base, emphasizing its strategic significance for the defense of NATO's eastern flank.

Located near the Black Sea and the borders with Ukraine, the air base has become a key element in the alliance's security system in the context of Russian aggression.

Cooperation with NATO places significant obligations on the Romanian Mihail Kogălniceanu air base, as it is expected to become the largest in Europe in the future. This will enhance the strategic defense potential of the region.
