NATO Exercise Hedgehog 2025

According to TSN.ua: A NATO training event, Hedgehog 2025, held in Estonia in May 2022, revealed significant weaknesses in the Alliance's strategic approaches. During the drills, a small Ukrainian contingent of 10-12 soldiers successfully simulated the destruction of 17 armored vehicles within half a day, showcasing the effectiveness of their tactics. Analysts estimated that, had the engagement been real, NATO forces would have suffered the loss of two full battalions. This exercise comes at a time when NATO is reassessing its defensive posture in Eastern Europe.

The NATO battle group involved consisted of a British brigade and an Estonian division. The Ukrainian military personnel gained a decisive edge in the simulated combat by utilizing the Delta battlefield management system.

"These exercises call into question the Alliance's readiness for actual combat against modern threats." - Aivar Hanniot

Commenting on the results, Maria Lemberg noted that many NATO countries display a "fundamental misunderstanding of the modern battlefield." The outcomes of Hedgehog 2025 underscore an urgent need for NATO to reconsider its military strategy and tactics, particularly in light of contemporary warfare. The stark contrast in performance highlights a potential gap in training and technology adoption within the Alliance.

Faced with escalating threats from both state and non-state actors, NATO must find ways to enhance its combat effectiveness and adapt to new realities of war. These exercises could serve as a crucial lesson for the Alliance in developing more capable and responsive forces for future conflicts.
