Expert Weighs In on the Effectiveness of Unmanned Ground Vehicles

According to Novyny.live: Unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) are showing strong results in Ukraine, particularly for troop logistics and medical evacuation, and their use is becoming a cornerstone of modern military tactics. Igor Fedirko, Executive Director of the Ukrainian Arms Council, stated in an interview with Novyny.LIVE that these robotic systems are currently handling logistics and medevac tasks with notable success.

“Right now, we see that UGVs have taken on logistics quite effectively... and also medical evacuation. I believe these areas will continue to expand.” — Igor Fedirko

The push to adopt UGV technology aligns with broader NATO initiatives. In late January 2023, the alliance announced plans to establish a demilitarized, robot-patrolled zone along the border with Russia and Belarus by the end of 2027. This underscores the growing importance of integrating advanced robotics into the defense strategies of NATO member states.

Additionally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced a planned points-based system for evacuating wounded soldiers using robots. According to Fedirko, this initiative is designed to encourage wider use of UGVs in medical evacuation, potentially boosting the speed and efficiency of these operations.

Fedirko also highlighted legal challenges tied to UGV deployment, noting that “there are various systems and special vehicles, but all must be equipped with a steering wheel and seatbelt. It’s hard to imagine that on a UGV. Unfortunately, this creates a legal conflict.” As a result, regulatory issues remain a critical hurdle in integrating new technologies into military operations.

In summary, unmanned ground vehicles are proving vital for logistics and medical evacuation in Ukraine, and their adoption is steadily advancing within modern military practice. Given global trends toward automation in warfare, the effectiveness of UGVs could become a key factor in enhancing the safety and operational speed of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. At the same time, unresolved legal questions highlight the urgent need to adapt legislation to keep pace with emerging technologies.
