Obtaining a driver's license in Ireland: what challenges Ukrainians face.
According to ТСН: Anna, a Ukrainian living in Ireland, shared her experience of obtaining a driver's license in this country. She noted that the process was quite complicated.
Theory: 40 questions and the language barrier
Anna explains that theoretical training in Ireland is done independently, using official materials, books, or apps. During the exam, candidates must answer 40 questions, of which at least 36 must be answered correctly.
She emphasizes that the biggest challenge was the language aspect. Anna was worried that she might misunderstand the instructions from the center staff before the test.
Practice: 6 or 12 lessons and a six-month wait
The number of mandatory lessons in Ireland depends on the candidate's driving experience. If there is no experience, 12 lessons with an instructor are required; if experience exists, then six lessons are enough, as confirmed by the RSA service.
Anna also notes that queues for the practical exam are very long, and sometimes it takes about six months to reach the instructors and find a testing date.
Training — right in the city
Another thing that surprised Anna: practical lessons take place not in a closed area but on city roads.
“They choose a calm area, but it's still very stressful. In Ukraine, we usually start in the driving school's yard, and only then do we go into the city.”
Despite all the difficulties, Anna believes that the system in Ireland is one of the most structured and prepares well for real traffic situations.
This experience shows how important it is to adapt to new conditions, especially in driving, and what challenges may arise in this process. After all, obtaining a driver's license in a new country is not just a legal aspect but also an important step towards integration into a new environment and life in a new culture. Anna came to the understanding that behind all this lies serious preparation and patience.
