Trump on NATO: The alliance will not be there for the US if we need it

According to ТСН: Donald Trump continues to pressure European allies, questioning the effectiveness of the North Atlantic Alliance without US support. In his post on the social media platform Truth Social, he claims that his actions have been a "rescue" for Ukraine and improved financial discipline in the bloc.

"I saved Ukraine"

Trump, in his usual style, claims that it is his efforts that prevented Russian aggression.

"Without my involvement, Russia would have had ALL OF UKRAINE right now," he wrote.

He also reproached allies for not "paying their bills" until he forced them to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP. Trump expressed doubts that the Alliance would come to the aid of the US if needed.

"I doubt NATO would be there for us if we really needed them... Russia and China are not afraid of NATO without the United States," Trump emphasized.

Analysis: NATO "does not serve its purpose"

Sean Bell emphasizes that Trump has never been a supporter of NATO, believing that America bears too great a burden in ensuring Europe's security.

"It is quite clear that President Trump believes the 80-year-old defense organization is no longer serving its purpose," the expert noted.

According to Bell, Trump's attention is now focused on the Western Hemisphere. And while he does not want to take responsibility for a possible breakup of the Alliance, it is becoming increasingly clear that NATO "does not comfortably fit" into the new US national security strategy.

It is worth recalling that Trump is seriously considering the possibility of seizing Greenland, which belongs to Denmark—a NATO member. Western media believe that the US is going all-in, while NATO seems powerless, and Europe cannot resist Trump's whims.

In the face of constant challenges and changes in international politics, Trump's statement reflects his approach to global security and alliances. Discussions about defense spending and NATO's place in the modern world will likely remain relevant, as changes in the strategies of major powers can significantly impact the global balance of power.
