In London, thousands of households will receive water bill discounts: how it works.
According to The Sun: Thames Water has introduced an innovative project that automatically reduces water bills for low-income households.
This largest water supply company in the UK serves about 16 million customers and is working to identify those in need of financial support in 17 London boroughs to automatically include them in social tariff programs.
Households will save on bills thanks to the new Thames Water scheme GettyThose identified as needing help do not need to apply — their bills will be reduced automatically.
Thames Water emphasizes that the initiative could save over 33,000 households in difficult financial situations more than £300 a year, totaling over £10 million annually.
The company aims to ensure that customers facing financial difficulties automatically receive the support they need, even if they are unaware of their eligibility.
This program is the result of a successful pilot project that took place earlier this year in Wandsworth and Richmond upon Thames.
According to data-sharing agreements, Thames Water collaborates with local authorities and the social data platform Policy in Practice to identify customers whose bills exceed 5% of their net income.
They are automatically enrolled in the WaterHelp program, which reduces bills by 50%.
Furthermore, the program identifies customers who may be on the WaterSure social tariff or receive assistance from the Extra Support Scheme up to £700.
Customers with debt can also receive financial assistance; however, Thames Water automatically enrolls households in debt into the WaterHelp program.

What did Thames Water say?
Nina White, Director of Revenues at Thames Water, emphasized that the company intends to 'provide vital services' for customers who 'are facing difficulties in paying bills.'
She added: 'This collaboration with local authorities and Policy in Practice enables us to reach thousands of customers who may not have even realized that our WaterHelp program could assist them.'
We hope to expand the program to more areas of London, with automatic enrollment of clients into the scheme if they meet the criteria.'
Wandsworth Council leader Simon Hogg noted: 'It is important for residents to receive the support they are entitled to.'
'Over 1,000 households in Wandsworth will now automatically see reduced water bills, which is vital support for those facing economic challenges and rising bills.'
Earlier this month, a group of Thames Water creditors announced plans to invest £20.5 billion to improve the company's operations amid financial difficulties.
The main creditors of the supplier, led by the London & Valley Water consortium, promise to 'reset the foundations' of Thames Water through a substantial investment proposal submitted to the regulator Ofwat.
They will focus on improving the company's performance on issues of pollution and leaks, aiming to reduce sewage discharges by at least 135 cases a year.
Thames Water faces the risk of nationalization due to significant debts.
How to reduce your bills
If you are experiencing financial difficulties, look into the option to reduce spending to help ease your way out of debt.
Council tax: You can apply for a council tax reduction on the Gov.uk website, but you must meet specific criteria. Your bill may be reduced by 100% if you have a low income or receive social benefits. Carers who look after someone in the household for at least 35 hours a week are also exempt from paying.
Water: Households can save on their bills by getting a water meter, but this depends on the amount used. To check if this is financially beneficial, use the free water meter calculator from the Consumer Council for Water.
Renting: If you have extra space and your landlord or local authority allows it, consider the possibility of getting neighboring accommodation. This will allow you to share the costs of rent and other bills.
Buy Now, Pay Later: If you cannot make payments on time, you can usually cancel the agreement by returning the item. You will need to pay all the payments owed up to the point of termination but this will limit your debt amount. Contact Citizens Advice for free help with this matter.
Gas and electricity: MoneySavingExpert notes that families can save an average of £330 by switching from standard variable tariffs to better deals. Use comparison websites such as MoneySuperMarket or Energyhelpline to check available offers.
Mortgage: If you are in mortgage payment arrears, do not wait for your lender to contact you. Calculate what you can afford using the Citizens Advice budgeting tool to discuss your payment options with your lender.
Secured loan: Your secured loan may fall under the Consumer Credit Act, and if so, you may apply for a time extension. This is a special court agreement that gives you more time to make payments. Secured loans that do not fall under the Act include gas, electric, or water meter payments, which need to be paid in full, mortgages, non-bank loans, and short-term trading agreements.
County court judgments: If you received a county court claim form, speak immediately with a free advisory service. This includes Citizens Advice (0808 800 9060), StepChange (0800 138 1111), and the National Debtline (0808 808 4000).
TV license: Some households are entitled to reduced fees or a free TV license. Check if you are eligible for a reduced or free rate.
