German Defense Minister Raises Alarm Over Russian Strikes on Ukraine's Energy Grid.
German Defense Minister's Statements
According to TSN.ua: Following trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius voiced deep concern regarding Russia's ongoing attacks on Ukraine's civilian energy infrastructure. He condemned the relentless and brutal strikes during a harsh winter, describing them as acts of terror against the Ukrainian population and a clear violation of international law. These comments underscore the strategic nature of Russia's winter campaign to weaponize cold and darkness against civilians.
Pistorius confirmed that Germany continues to deliver Iris-T air defense systems to Ukraine without interruption. However, he stressed that Berlin currently has limited capacity to further scale up its assistance in air defense. The Defense Minister also noted that deliveries of American Patriot systems are currently not possible, highlighting a critical gap in Ukraine's defensive capabilities.
The Situation in Ukraine
Pistorius pointed to Kharkiv as a specific example, where parts of the city were left without power following recent bombardments. He further revealed that the Bundeswehr has already expended over a third of its ammunition stockpiles, a factor that may impact Germany's future military support for Ukraine. This depletion reflects the sustained pressure on Western arsenals after two years of conflict.
The German minister's remarks signal growing apprehension among Western nations about the security of Ukraine's energy grid amid winter assaults. Despite ongoing military deliveries, constraints on increasing aid could affect Ukraine's ability to withstand the aggression.
The situation in Kharkiv, targeted by shelling, highlights the severity of the challenges facing not only Ukraine but also its international partners in ensuring defense and security. The unpredictability of events in the region may act as a catalyst for further international negotiations on supporting Ukraine.
