Russian Forces Target Deminers in Kherson Region

According to Novyny.live: The international humanitarian group Norwegian People’s Aid has suspended its demining activities across Ukraine after two of its team members were killed in a Russian attack. Operating in the country since 2022, the organization suffered these losses during a strike on June 24, 2023, in the village of Novopetrivka, part of the Vysokopillya community.

One staff member died instantly at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries later in the hospital. Reacting to the tragedy, the organization’s Secretary General, Raymond Johansen, stated:

“This attack demonstrates how perilous it is to work as a humanitarian aid worker during war and conflict.” - Raymond Johansen

Norwegian People’s Aid currently employs 475 personnel in Ukraine, all engaged in the critical mission of clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance.

Conditions in the Kherson Region

In early June 2023, Ukrainian authorities recorded 443 attacks by Russian forces in the Kherson region. Over the course of a single week, the enemy deployed roughly 800 munitions, resulting in 11 fatalities and 97 injuries. These events underscore the severe security situation in the area and the heightened dangers faced by humanitarian workers striving to assist those affected by the conflict.

This tragic incident highlights the escalating risks for humanitarian missions in Ukraine, particularly in active combat zones. The suspension of Norwegian People’s Aid operations could significantly slow demining efforts, which in turn delays infrastructure restoration and the safe return of displaced residents to their homes. Amid ongoing assaults, ensuring the safety of aid workers is paramount, as their work remains vital to supporting civilians enduring the war’s devastating consequences.
