The First Muslim Leads New York: The New Mayor Took Oath on the Quran

According to ТСН: On New Year's Eve, newly elected New York Mayor Zokhran Mamdani officially began his duties.

A Historic Moment for New York

During his inauguration, Mamdani took an oath on the Quran, becoming the first Muslim in this position in the city's history and the first mayor to use the Quran for this ritual.

Zokhran Mamdani represents diverse demographic groups that previously had no representation in high state positions, including South Asian immigrants, millennials, and Muslims.

For hundreds of thousands of Muslim residents, who were proud of this achievement, the inauguration was an important event. During the oath-taking, the mayor placed his hand on the Quran. Two copies were used: one belonged to Mamdani's grandfather, and the other was provided by the New York Public Library from the collection of writer Arturo Schomburg. Later, at a public ceremony near the city hall, he plans to use a third copy, which is a family heirloom of his grandmother and grandfather.

Although there was no requirement to use a religious text at the ceremony, Mamdani's predecessors usually took their oaths on the Bible.

A Young Leader and His Promises

Mamdani, a 34-year-old immigrant from Uganda, became the first Muslim mayor and the youngest mayor of New York in over a century. His victory in last summer's Democratic primary attracted the attention of the global community. In his campaign, he emphasized accessibility, promising to create a universal childcare program, freeze rent for around two million tenants, and make city buses 'fast and free.'

Mayor Mamdani takes office at a time when the city is in need of renewal and progressive changes. His leadership could be key to garnering support from various segments of the population who hope for real changes in living conditions and social services. The new mayor's further steps could significantly impact the city's development in the coming years, creating new opportunities for all New Yorkers.
