According to ТСН: The New Year's bustle and holiday planning often create the impression that everyone around is happy except for you. However, the feeling of loneliness during the holidays is familiar to many, especially in times of war.

The National Police of Ukraine, within the framework of the nationwide mental health program 'How are you?', reminds us of the importance of taking care of ourselves during this period.

Why is it so hard right now

Loneliness can arise for various reasons, not always due to the physical absence of people around.

  • You might be alone if your loved ones are far away or you are experiencing loss.

  • You might be among people, but still feel alienated.

  • You might simply be exhausted, to the point where you have no strength to put on a brave face and be happy.

In such moments, social pressure, such as the demands to 'celebrate' or 'be happy', only worsens the emotional state.

The main rule: 'You can'

Psychologists advise: you should not force yourself to wear a mask of happiness. The best thing you can do for your mental health is to allow yourself to be authentic.

'You can: live these days as they come. Slowly. Honestly. In your own way,' psychologists advise.

How to support yourself

If you don't feel festive, try to focus on your inner comfort rather than external holiday attributes.

  1. Don't fake joy. Don't try to pretend you are in a festive mood if you're not. Honesty with yourself helps reduce mental tension.

  2. Be with yourself. Instead of escaping from feelings to loud parties or alcohol, try to spend time alone with yourself. Take care of yourself as you would take care of your best friend.

  3. Set your own rules. You have every right to turn off your phone, go to bed earlier, order pizza instead of Olivier salad, or simply watch your favorite series.

This New Year is just a date on the calendar. Only you decide what meaning to give it to preserve yourself.

There is a simple psychological trick that can help overcome loneliness and ensure warmth in communication, reducing feelings of isolation. Remember that simple but effective ways to support your mental health are necessary in these challenging times.
