Violence in Lausanne after tragic incident

According to The Sun: The Swiss city of Lausanne is engulfed by a wave of violence following the tragic death of a young migrant. Youths set buses on fire, threw Molotov cocktails, and attacked the police with stones.

The protesters continued to clash with the security forces during the second night, with about 200 rioters and 140 police officers involved.

Causes of the unrest

The catalyst for the protests was the death of 17-year-old Marvin M., who died while attempting to flee from the police on a stolen scooter. The police claim that the teenager lost control at high speed in an area where the speed limit is 30 km/h. The scooter had been stolen the day before, and a patrol car was pursuing him before the crash.

“We want to know the truth about the incidents,” said one of the youths.

The anger in the region has been building following the death of a 14-year-old girl in June while she tried to flee from the police on a motorcycle. The rioters even attempted to attack a politician from an anti-immigrant party.

Authorities and reactions

After the unrest, the city of Lausanne took urgent measures to prevent further acts of violence by mobilizing additional resources.

Mayor Grégoire Junod called for solutions to the issues of systematic discrimination within the police after racist and sexist messages were discovered in WhatsApp groups among officers.

These events coincide with a broader crisis in Europe, where countries are facing waves of violence related to migrants.

Problems in other European countries

The Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom are also experiencing outbreaks of violence and social protests related to the migrant crisis, highlighting the increasingly tense European situation.
