Attack Knocks Out Power Line to Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant, Forcing Diesel Generator Use.
Power Loss at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant
According to UATV: A high-voltage power line supplying the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was severed on June 11, 2023, due to a hostile attack. As a result, the facility has switched to backup diesel generators. This marks the 19th complete blackout of the plant since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
The attack has caused electricity supply disruptions across multiple Ukrainian regions. Areas affected include:
- Sumy
- Kharkiv
- Donetsk
- Dnipropetrovsk
- Zaporizhzhia
- Kherson
According to Ukrenergo officials, 'The nuclear plant has shifted to diesel generators. Current security conditions do not allow for a safe inspection of the line.'
Current State of Power Supply
The power supply situation remains precarious, with further challenges expected for energy infrastructure safety amid wartime conditions. This incident underscores the critical importance of nuclear plant security in Ukraine, as any failure could lead to a major disaster. Ongoing shelling and power outages threaten both the country's energy stability and public safety. In times of war, restoring infrastructure is not enough—ensuring safe operating and maintenance conditions is equally vital.
