Rights Violations in the 425th Separate Assault Regiment 'Skelya'

According to Novyny.live: Dmytro Lubinets, the Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights, is investigating allegations of torture and mistreatment of service members within the 425th Separate Assault Regiment 'Skelya'. On June 24, he announced the inquiry, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Over the past six months, 26 deaths have been recorded at training centers linked to this unit, with pneumonia cited as the most common cause. The majority of those who died had been with the regiment for less than a month, raising serious concerns about service conditions. This case highlights ongoing scrutiny of military practices amid Ukraine’s wartime mobilization.

Lubinets stated: 'I have received information about potential serious violations of the rights of military personnel in the 425th Separate Assault Regiment 'Skelya'. This includes reports of possible torture, the establishment of unauthorized detention spaces, and instances of soldiers being driven to suicide.'

He emphasized that any human rights abuses, especially under martial law, are unacceptable and require an urgent response.

As part of the broader investigation, the State Bureau of Investigation is also documenting four deaths of mobilized individuals at Territorial Recruitment Centers (TCCs). Notably, serious human rights violations have been identified at the Uzhhorod TCC. 'A monitoring team from the Ombudsman’s Office will be dispatched to the site tomorrow for an inspection. No potential human rights violation should go without proper legal assessment!' Lubinets added.

It is important to note that representatives of the 425th Separate Assault Regiment claim 'these deaths are genuinely linked to illnesses or the generally poor health of the mobilized personnel.' However, a more detailed investigation will aim to uncover the full circumstances of these tragic cases and implement appropriate measures.

The Need for Oversight of Service Conditions

This situation underscores the critical need for strict oversight of military service conditions, particularly during wartime. Protecting the rights and well-being of service members becomes even more urgent given the rising number of reported violations. This inquiry could serve as a key step toward addressing systemic issues within military units and ensuring compliance with human rights standards amid the conflict.
