Insurance companies will pay £200 million in compensation to car owners: who will receive it.
According to The Sun: More than 270,000 drivers will receive compensation due to violations in the field of automotive insurance.
The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has announced that a total of £200 million will be paid out to compensate drivers.
GettyDrivers will receive these funds due to deficiencies in their insurance.
Payments will become possible after FCA found that some insurers shortchanged clients in cases of theft or write-offs of vehicles.
A check conducted last year showed that some insurers automatically reduced payments, assuming that vehicles had previous damage.
The FCA stated that such actions violated the principles of fair treatment.
To date, £129 million has already been paid to nearly 150,000 clients.
If you are entitled to compensation, you need not do anything — your insurance company will contact you.
Sarah Pritchard, Deputy Chief Executive of the FCA, said: “We intervene when consumers do not receive a fair price – and we are pleased to see that the practices that led to some unfair payments have already changed.”
“This means that thousands of drivers are getting back what their cars are truly worth in cases where they were stolen or written off.”
The FCA now claims that insurers have changed their practices.
The authority noted that as early as 2022, it warned insurers about the need not to undervalue vehicles and other insured items when settling claims.
Detection of improper payments
The regulator conducted a check last year, in which it examined how insurers assess vehicles, and found that many clients received less money than they were entitled to.
The check involved 12 insurers and discussions were held with six others.
The Sun approached the FCA for information about which insurers are paying compensations.
But Admiral has already announced last month that it set aside funds to compensate clients who may have been affected.
In its half-year report, the company acknowledged that it failed to respond in time to rising prices for used cars.
Admiral clients who filed a claim for theft or write-off from 2019 to 2025 will be informed if they are entitled to compensation, according to FCA information.
Compensations for car financial loans
In addition, millions of drivers may receive up to £950 in compensation for car financial loans.
The regulator plans to launch a refund program for drivers who were affected by “hidden” commission payments.
Up to £18 billion is expected to be paid out in the next year.
The Financial Conduct Authority is expected to confirm details of how this will work by October.
What to do if you think you are owed money?
As already mentioned, your insurance company should contact you if it believes you are entitled to compensation.
But if you are not satisfied with how your claim was processed, you can contact the insurer.
If you are not happy with their response, you can also reach out to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
There is no need to contact claims management companies to file a complaint or claim.
The payment of compensation to drivers is an important step towards restoring fairness in car insurance, as many clients have suffered significant losses due to dishonest practices of insurers. The Financial Conduct Authority continues to work on addressing problems in the industry, which will undoubtedly increase consumer trust in these services.Read also
