Fuel Crisis Paralyzes Occupied Mariupol: Gas Stations Now Selling Petrol in 100-Gram Portions.
Fuel Crisis in Mariupol
According to Novyny.live: Mariupol, a city under occupation, is facing an unprecedented fuel shortage that has brought the region to a standstill. According to Vadym Pikuz, acting head of the Mariupol District Council, the scarcity of petrol and diesel has crippled logistics and disrupted the supply of essential goods across nearly the entire city.
The severity of the situation is evident as some gas stations have resorted to pricing fuel per 100 grams—a clear indicator of the extreme deficit. Food delivery companies are now accepting payment in petrol instead of cash, forcing residents to adapt. In response, locals have been rushing to buy electric scooters as an alternative mode of transport.
Impact on City Life
The crisis has also paralyzed emergency services. It is currently impossible to call an ambulance, as even first responders lack the fuel needed to operate. Additionally, the city is without electricity, and generators remain idle due to a shortage of diesel.
'Because there is no petrol, almost nothing works.' Vadym Pikuz
Pikuz noted that 'the situation is more critical now than it has been in a long time,' underscoring the gravity of the collapse. This fuel crisis has effectively destroyed the city's 'tourist season,' dealing another heavy blow to the local economy. With fuel now a rare commodity, daily life for Mariupol’s residents has become a struggle marked by numerous hardships.
The fuel shortage in Mariupol stems not only from economic difficulties but also from the broader political turmoil in the region. The lack of fuel severely limits access to medical care and basic necessities. Such challenges could have long-term consequences for the city’s post-conflict recovery, as rebuilding infrastructure will require stability and resources that are currently unavailable.
