Pope Francis expressed great sorrow over Russia's refusal of the Christmas truce.
According to ТСН: Pope Francis Leo XIV expressed his deep condolences regarding Russia's refusal of the initiative for a Christmas truce in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, which has lasted for nearly four years.
He stated this during a conversation with journalists, noting:
‘Among the things that cause me great sorrow is that it seems Russia has rejected the request for a ceasefire’.
The head of the Catholic Church called on all parties to the conflict to find a way to stop hostilities at least on Christmas. He emphasized:
‘I once again appeal to people of goodwill to respect at least Christmas as a day of peace’.
Pope Leo XIV hopes that his appeal will be heard and that the world will receive at least a brief moment of peace, stating:
‘Perhaps they will hear us, and then there will be at least 24 hours — one day of peace — around the world’.
Leo XIV, who is the first Pope from the United States, has repeatedly called for an end to the war in Ukraine and for achieving peace through dialogue.
This appeal from the Pope is an important reminder of the need for peace in the context of a prolonged military conflict. His words could become an important step towards dialogue between the parties and finding ways to reduce tension, as peace even for one day can save numerous lives.
