Russia’s Pressure on Armenia’s Elections

According to UATV: Armenia is holding elections under intense pressure from Russia, a situation that has effectively escalated into a hybrid war between the two nations. Ruben Mehrabyan, a political analyst and vice-chairman of the 'For the Republic' party, points out that Moscow is striving to pull Armenia back into its sphere of influence. However, the Armenian people have already chosen a pro-European path, despite these efforts.

According to Mehrabyan, the current elections represent a critical test for Armenia’s very statehood.

“These elections are truly an exam for Armenian statehood as such,” he stated.
Armenia’s incumbent Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, has already cast his ballot, signaling the government’s intent to continue pursuing European integration.

Mehrabyan also highlights that Armenia’s situation is complicated by a lack of real alternatives in its relationship with Russia.

“Russia leaves us no choice,” he emphasizes.
Additionally, the expert notes that 'the language issue in Armenia is not effective,' pointing to social and cultural challenges the country faces.

Political Realities and Challenges

As a result, Armenia’s elections are unfolding amid complex political realities that demand caution and resolve from both citizens and politicians. In the context of a hybrid war and external pressure, the outcome of these elections could significantly shape the country’s future trajectory.

These elections mark a pivotal moment in Armenia’s development, potentially determining whether the country moves toward European integration or returns to its traditional dependence on Russia. With mounting external pressure and internal hurdles, the results will reflect the people’s political choice and the state’s ability to adapt to new circumstances. The role of civil society is especially crucial, as it may influence how events unfold in the country moving forward.
