Pentagon will receive nuclear warhead missiles for launching from submarines.
The Pentagon allocated $2.1 billion for the production of missiles and nuclear warheads for them. The Pentagon concluded a contract with the Lockheed Martin Corporation for the production of intercontinental ballistic missiles Trident II D5 with new nuclear warheads, according to an official statement from the department. The deal is worth $2.1 billion.
«Lockheed Martin Space received an addendum to the contract worth $2.1 billion for the production of Trident II D5 missiles and support for deployed systems, as well as the development of Warhead 93/Mark7», the text says.
The warheads are designed for launch from submarines. Work is expected to be completed by September 30, 2029.
Earlier, the United States conducted an electronic test launch of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile. The corresponding activities took place at Offut Air Force Base in Nebraska. At the same Time, the testing did not include the actual use of the missile. Previous tests of Minuteman III missiles ended with engine failure.
Recall that the U.S. Department of Defense announced the start of work on the «Pele» project, which involves the creation of a mobile nuclear reactor. According to the plan, work on the reactor will begin early next year, and in 2026 the fully assembled device will be delivered to the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).
