Zelensky and Trump Held Talks: Why the Absence of Ultimatums is Already a Success.
According to ТСН: The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has concluded a new round of negotiations with the President of the United States Donald Trump in Florida. While no significant progress has been made in the peace process, the Ukrainian leader has maintained the momentum of diplomatic relations. An important achievement was that the negotiations took place without strict deadlines, and Trump avoided direct demands from the Kremlin.
Main Outcomes of the Meeting
One of the significant results of the meeting at Mar-a-Lago was Trump's refusal to set strict deadlines for ending the war. Earlier he mentioned deadlines associated with Thanksgiving and Christmas, but now he acknowledged the complexity of the process.
“I have no deadlines. Do you know what my deadline is? To end the war,” Trump told reporters, emphasizing that this is “a very complicated matter” that cannot simply be resolved in one day.
For Ukraine, this meeting is considered positive, as it did not end in failure or ultimatums. Unlike previous negotiations, Trump did not raise unacceptable demands from Russia, which is important given that he had a conversation with Putin prior to the meeting.
Peace Plan and Cooperation with Europe
Volodymyr Zelensky assessed the readiness of the peace plan at 90%. He emphasized the progress in obtaining security guarantees from the U.S. and European allies. The possibility of creating a demilitarized zone from which the troops of both sides would withdraw was discussed. However, differences still remain regarding the status of the occupied territories in eastern Ukraine and control over the nuclear power plant.
Trump noted that the word “agreement” is still too strong, although the parties are “getting closer” to understanding on territorial issues.
The next round of negotiations in the U.S. is scheduled for next month. Zelensky stressed the importance of the official participation of European leaders in the process. Involving Europe as a full-fledged partner could strengthen Ukraine's position and prevent possible secret agreements between Washington and Moscow.
Trump stated that there is significant progress towards ending the war, estimating the finalization of agreements at 95%. He confirmed consultations with key allies in Europe and a conversation with Putin.
Zelensky reported that the developed peace plan with 20 points is currently approved at 90%.
A new round of negotiations between the leaders of Ukraine and the U.S. is scheduled for December 29.
This meeting demonstrated that the negotiation process continues, despite the complexity of the situation. It is important that both presidents approach the issue of peace talks with openness and readiness for dialogue. Further steps may significantly impact the future of the peace process in Ukraine.
