Why a Lasting Peace with Russia Remains Elusive Ahead of Abu Dhabi Talks.
Analyst: Abu Dhabi Talks Cannot Yield a True Peace While Occupation Continues
According to TSN.ua: Political analyst Ihor Tyshkevych has emphasized that any agreements reached while Russia occupies parts of Ukraine would be temporary and could not constitute a final peace. Consultations involving delegations from Russia, Ukraine, and the United States are scheduled for February 1 in Abu Dhabi. According to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, these talks are sensitive and extremely complex.
Ihor Tyshkevych of the Ukrainian Institute of the Future points out that the term 'peace' in this context requires clarification. He noted:
'What is peace? It is a peace agreement that puts an end to a war or a conflict.' Ihor Tyshkevych
He simultaneously stresses that under conditions where part of Ukraine's territory remains occupied, 'as of today, if we speak about definitions, we are talking about a temporary freezing of the war.'
Thus, the Abu Dhabi negotiations may become an important step in seeking ways to reduce tensions, but a definitive peace under the current circumstances is unattainable. Tyshkevych underscores that without resolving the issue of Ukraine's territorial integrity, any agreements will remain merely temporary arrangements.
The Context of the Negotiations
The Abu Dhabi talks are occurring against the backdrop of a prolonged military confrontation between Ukraine and Russia that has been ongoing since 2014. With the question of territorial integrity unresolved, diplomatic efforts may be aimed at achieving short-term deals that cannot ensure a stable peace. These negotiations are part of a series of international diplomatic efforts to manage the ongoing crisis. Consequently, the results of these talks may influence future relations between the states, but their effectiveness will be limited by the existing territorial disputes.
