Experts: Geneva Talks Unlikely to Yield Swift Peace Agreement.
Ukraine, US, and Russia Hold Negotiations
According to UATV: On February 15, 2023, a trilateral meeting took place involving Ukraine, the United States, and the Russian Federation. Political analysts, however, believe these discussions will not quickly lead to a peace settlement. The appointment of Vladimir Medinsky as the head of the Russian delegation has generated significant skepticism among experts. They argue that the composition of the Russian team complicates the potential for achieving a rapid breakthrough.
This meeting follows earlier talks in Abu Dhabi, where the Russian delegation included military personnel involved in discussing the technical details of a potential ceasefire. In contrast, the new delegation led by Medinsky does not inspire optimism.
As one expert, Oleh Posternak, noted: 'It is clear that Geneva is not a story about a quick peace in 24 hours.'
The agenda for upcoming meetings is expected to cover the following topics:
- The status of the Russian language
- Limitations on Ukraine's Armed Forces
- Demilitarization
Oleh Posternak also commented on Medinsky, describing him as 'the stale spirit of 'Istanbul' entering the negotiations once again.' These remarks reflect a prevailing view of the new Russian delegation and its perceived limitations within the peace process.
Consequently, despite the trilateral talks, the prospects for reaching a peace agreement remain uncertain due to the complex political context and the specific makeup of the delegations.
These negotiations occur against the backdrop of a protracted conflict that began in 2014, making any peace efforts a focal point for the international community. The effectiveness of the delegations will be crucial not only for regional stability but also for the potential restoration of economic ties and social cohesion in Ukraine. Future rounds of talks may reveal more details regarding the parties' positions and possible compromises.
