The Kremlin's Negotiating Tactics

According to UATV: An analysis of Moscow's approach to talks with Ukraine and the United States reveals a lack of flexibility on Russia's part and outlines potential future scenarios. Viktor Yagun, Director of the Security Sector Reform Agency, argues that Ukraine is in a more resilient position to conduct negotiations. He emphasizes that Russia is merely testing the reactions of both the U.S. and Ukraine, which indicates Moscow's absence of a constructive strategy.

Yagun states that if Russia simply reiterates the same unacceptable demands,

"Ukraine's withdrawal from these talks would be a logical step."
This underscores Ukraine's readiness to exit negotiations if the terms are not suitable. He also notes that a unified stance between Europe and the United States is crucial for successful diplomacy.
"Without an understanding in the U.S. that only pressure and a unified position can make this happen, unfortunately, it will not,"
Yagun adds.

U.S.-European Relations

Furthermore, he points to the complicated relationship between Donald Trump and European nations.

"Trump does not understand the system of relations within the European Union and is trying, to some extent, to divide certain countries,"
says Yagun. This could negatively impact the coordination of actions between the U.S. and Europe, which in turn may complicate the negotiation process with Russia.

A key factor is the position of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who stresses that

"only in interaction with Europe, only after coordinating certain actions with Europe, can we truly actively participate in negotiations."
This demonstrates Ukraine's focus on collective action with its European partners, a strategy that could strengthen its bargaining position. The ongoing conflict, now in its third year, has made European and transatlantic unity a cornerstone of Western support for Kyiv.

While the prospects for future talks remain uncertain, Ukraine's stance, backed by support from the U.S. and Europe, could be decisive factors in achieving progress in the dialogue with Russia. The situation surrounding negotiations between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. remains complex, given Moscow's rigid positions and potential rifts between the U.S. and European allies. Strengthening Western unity with Ukraine and a clear understanding of the conditions for negotiation are vital elements for any potential breakthrough. In the context of global politics, cooperation between partners is critically important for the effectiveness of any peace initiatives.
