Trump wants to see a meeting between Zelensky and Putin first: details of the US plan.
Donald Trump has expressed a desire to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin during negotiations, but initially, he wants the two Ukrainian and Russian leaders to meet by themselves. Only after that does he plan to join the trilateral dialogue, as reported by The Guardian.
Britain and the European Union are preparing new sanctions against Russia if Putin does not agree to negotiations with Zelensky. Kyiv is ready for any format of negotiations, as only the result matters to them.
'We need a meeting. If a meeting with the Russians is necessary to end the war, and then a trilateral meeting, we are ready for any configuration of these meetings. We have made a step toward them. And they need to do something to demonstrate that they really want to end the war as they announced,' - said Volodymyr Zelensky.
A possible meeting between Zelensky and Putin may take place in one of the neutral countries in Europe. If direct negotiations can be achieved, a key outcome could be a ceasefire, which would become an important step towards further trilateral dialogue.
'We enter into a bilateral format, then into a trilateral one. I believe that without agreements in the bilateral format and without a ceasefire format - the trilateral one is practically impossible. The United States needs to be present at the moment of ending the war or at the moment that signals that the war will end. Otherwise, there will be no success,' - said the President of Ukraine.
It is obvious that for Russia, negotiations are not a means to end the war, but merely a tool for further escalation of the conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine is ready for various formats of meetings, hoping to find a path to peace.
