The Death of Security Forces and Protesters in Iran: Protests Escalate into Anti-Government Movements.
According to ТСН: On Thursday, during mass protests in Iran that have lasted several days due to hyperinflation, at least three people were killed, including one security officer.
The protests began last weekend when traders at the large Tehran market held demonstrations against soaring prices, currency devaluation, and economic stagnation.
Subsequently, the protest activity grew into a broader movement caused by systemic criticism of the current regime. It has spread to universities, and now millions of people are taking to the streets.
Many demonstrators are calling for the restoration of the monarchy. They echo slogans like:
“This is the last battle, [Shah] Pahlavi will return”.
Security forces in many regions where protests took place responded with tear gas and detentions. According to confirmed reports, during clashes, students and youth faced violence from the police.
At least two civilians were killed during clashes on Thursday morning between armed protesters and security forces in the western city of Lordegan.
The human rights group Hengaw also reported casualties in this city. It is noted that security forces killed and injured several protesters by opening fire on them.
Additionally, on Wednesday, another protester was shot in the central province of Isfahan.
Situation Among Security Forces
Meanwhile, the state news agency IRNA reports that a volunteer from the paramilitary Basij force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps was killed on Wednesday evening in Kuhdasht, in the west of the country. This is the first death among Iran's security forces since the unrest began on Sunday.
The Basij volunteer forces are subordinate to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and operate alongside Iran's armed formations, directly accountable to the Supreme Leader of the country, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
A student news network, considered close to the Basij, cites the deputy governor of Lorestan province, who stated that a member of the Guard “was killed at the hands of participants in the riots during the protests.”
Also, 13 members of the Basij forces and police were injured during the clashes.
Remember, on New Year's Eve, protesters set fire to a Basij outpost in the city of Chenari.
These protests reflect the growing dissatisfaction of the population with the situation in the country. Given the large number of participants, as well as the variety of demands, despite the harsh response from security forces, the situation in Iran remains tense. It will be interesting to observe whether protesters can achieve changes in the country's political course or whether the situation will escalate further under increasingly harsh repression.
