Declining NATO Approval in the United States

According to Espreso.tv: Approval of NATO among the American public has dropped to its lowest point across all 32 allied nations. The average backing for the Alliance now stands at 57 percent—a decline of 8 percentage points compared to 2025. While a majority of Americans still favor NATO membership, this trend signals waning enthusiasm for the military organization within the United States.

Survey Findings

According to the poll, 62 percent of respondents believe that being part of the Alliance reduces the likelihood of an attack on their country, and 65 percent would vote to remain a NATO member. Additionally, 72 percent view the transatlantic link as critical to their nation's security.

Analysts suggest that the dip in NATO support may stem from the rhetoric of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who has questioned the solidarity among allied nations under NATO's Article 5 agreement. Consequently, despite strong membership approval figures, overall trust in the Alliance appears to be on a downward trajectory.

The drop in U.S. support for NATO could have serious repercussions for global security and stability.

Amid rising geopolitical challenges—including Russian aggression and instability in several regions—it is essential that allied nations maintain unity and cohesion. Eroding confidence in NATO may complicate collective defense commitments and alter how the Alliance is perceived abroad, potentially further diminishing its standing on the world stage.
