Summit in Berlin: Peace for Ukraine is One Step Closer.
According to ТСН: In the evening before, a two-day summit dedicated to Ukraine concluded in Berlin. The event was attended by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, leaders of the EU, and representatives from the USA, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The situation regarding peace in Ukraine is closer than ever.
It is reported that European allies agreed during the summit to help ensure security in Ukraine after the end of the war. In particular, the deployment of volunteer troops from the 'Coalition of the Willing' is planned, as well as support for the Ukrainian Armed Forces during peacetime amounting to 800,000 personnel.
It is noted that the United States and various international organizations may take control over the observance of the ceasefire regime. The European Union, for its part, expressed resolute support for Ukraine’s accession and readiness to invest in the country’s reconstruction.
The results of the summit were also discussed with US President Donald Trump. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz reported that Trump offered significant security guarantees to Ukraine.
Trump noted:
‘I think we are closer [to peace] now than ever before.’
Chancellor Merz also urged Russia to announce a Christmas truce, emphasizing that this could be the first step toward a lasting ceasefire. He expressed hope that the Russian leadership still has a shred of human dignity left and will grant peace to the people for Christmas.
‘Now it only depends on Russia whether the truce will be achieved by Christmas,’he added.
French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized that Moscow must take the next step:
‘Now it is Russia’s task to make its decisions for peace.’
The Kremlin has yet to comment on the proposals of European leaders regarding the peace plan developed in Berlin.
At the same time, it is reported that the USA, Ukraine, and Europe have reached an agreement on security guarantees. However, it is still too early to speak of the final conclusion of hostilities, as the situation resembles shuttle diplomacy: on one side - Ukraine and its allies, on the other - Russia.
According to Politico, the USA is ready to provide Ukraine with robust security guarantees similar to Article 5. However, this proposal does not have an indefinite validity and contains a hidden ultimatum: either Ukraine accepts it now, or the next proposal will be less favorable.
It is now important to monitor the developments and Russia’s reaction to the proposals from European leaders. The future of the peace process in Ukraine depends on this. The security guarantees discussed during the summit could significantly impact the situation in the region if implemented.
