Famous Ukrainian film director, screenwriter and publicist, poet Oleksandr Muratov has passed away at the age of 89. This was announced on Monday, April 14, by the National Union of Cinematographers of Ukraine and the Dovzhenko Centre.

Muratov was a distinguished figure in the arts of Ukraine and a holder of the Order of Merit of the third degree.

Creative legacy of Oleksandr Muratov

He was born on April 21, 1935, in Kharkiv. Among his works are the films Can You Live, Our Honest Bread, as well as adaptations of the works of Mykola Khvylovy: Tango of Death, Away with Shame! and Woodcock.

The National Union of Cinematographers noted that Oleksandr Muratov left behind a significant creative legacy - artistic and documentary films, screenplays, literary texts, as well as warm memories from colleagues and friends. 'A life lived with dignity and productivity,' they added in the organization.

Legacy at the Dovzhenko Centre

In 2024, the director transferred part of his materials to the Dovzhenko Centre, which enriched the collections of the Film Archive, Museum of Cinema, and Film Fund. Among the transferred materials are photographs, films, posters, screenplays, books, letters, and editing lists.

It is worth recalling that legendary American film director, musician, artist, and actor David Lynch passed away at the age of 78. The former head of the Culture Department of the Kyiv City State Administration, general director of the Museum of the History of Kyiv, Diana Popova, has also died.
