Swimmer Gorbunko missed the Olympic final because she went to dinner.
On the final day of the Olympic swimming tournament in the indoor pool, a real drama took place. The final at the distance of 200 meters individual medley was contested by only seven athletes instead of eight.
According to the competition rules, the top eight swimmers advance to the final. In case a finalist refuses, two reserves are appointed.
The first reserve was the Israeli swimmer of Ukrainian origin Anastasia Gorbunko. She got a chance to compete in the final due to the refusal of Australian Ella Ramsey, but due to an unsatisfactory communication process, she did not make it to the pool in time.
Gorbunko was furious as she was having dinner and not included in the problem-solving process. The second reserve swimmer, the 2012 Olympic champion Ye Shiwen, also did not appear at the start.
As a result, only seven athletes competed in the final instead of eight.
For the record, on August 4th, Yaroslava Maguchikh became an Olympic champion, and bronze was won by Irina Gerashchenko.
Additionally, Ukrainian Olga Kharlan won the first medal for Ukraine at the Olympic Games in Paris. In the match for third place, she defeated South Korean representative Sebin Choi.
