Europe warned Zelensky: peace on Russia's terms threatens a new war.
According to ТСН: European leaders fear that a peace agreement favorable to the Kremlin could lead to a widening of the war across the continent.
In the new U.S. National Security Strategy, Europeans are accused of having "unrealistic expectations" regarding the conflict. Shortly before the publication of this document, European leaders warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he should not agree to significant concessions in negotiations with the U.S. without discussing the details of potential proposals from Washington in case Russia violates the peace agreement and launches another attack on Ukraine.
"We want peace. But not peace that is actually capitulation," said French President Emmanuel Macron last month.
He characterized such peace as an agreement that "gives Russia complete freedom to continue advancing" and threaten Europe.
"Imagine if Putin achieved his goal. Ukraine under pressure from Russian occupation, his troops press on a longer NATO border, and the risk of armed attacks on us significantly increases," said NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.
He emphasized that NATO will have to significantly strengthen its presence near the borders with Russia and face financial difficulties due to increased military expenditures, which will exceed already planned defense spending.
"Europeans have been trying for months to dissuade Washington from peace proposals that they consider too favorable for Russia. Recently, European leaders supported Ukraine's position in rejecting a White House call for Kyiv to withdraw troops from well-fortified territories in Donbas to deter Russia from obtaining these territories, which could ease a future invasion by the Russian Federation," the article says.
Also, Volodymyr Zelensky reported that currently the "most intense and targeted negotiations for peace" since the beginning of the war are taking place.
The German publication Bild notes that after negotiations in Berlin, Western politicians spoke of an end to the war in Ukraine. They believe that it is now "closer than ever before." The same opinion is echoed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Thus, current discussions around the peace agreement and military positions in Ukraine indicate that the situation remains tense. European leaders are determined to safeguard their own security, while the U.S., in turn, is seeking ways to reach a compromise. It is important for all participants in the negotiations to consider the risks that may arise if the terms of peace are not fair to Ukraine.
