Ukrainian Police Granted Access to Military Draft Databases for Status Checks.
Ukraine's Mobilization: National Police Role in Verifying Citizen Status
According to Novyny.live: Former Deputy Prosecutor General Mykola Golomsha has explained that police officers can now access military conscription databases, enabling them to stop men and verify their mobilization status. Speaking on the Ranok.LIVE program on March 9, he noted that National Police personnel can utilize the Territorial Recruitment Center (TRC) database, which enhances their operational effectiveness in this duty. This development comes as Ukraine continues its defense against the ongoing Russian invasion, placing a critical focus on manpower for its armed forces.
If a citizen cannot produce documents confirming their mobilization status, they risk being detained. Mykola Golomsha also stressed the importance of understanding the law:
"Ignorance of the law is not an acceptable defense, as it does not absolve one from responsibility" - Mykola Golomsha
This underscores the necessity for all citizens to be aware of their legal rights and obligations.
The Ongoing Relevance of Mobilization
Expert Serhiy Koshel added that TRC search warrants have a specific validity period, which can impact mobilization procedures. In turn, Member of Parliament Oksana Savchuk has called on the government to clarify the number of individuals liable for military service, highlighting the topic's prominence in society. Under martial law, it is vital for all parties involved to be informed and prepared to act.
Mobilization remains a crucial aspect of Ukraine's national security, and the active involvement of the National Police in verifying citizen status underscores the seriousness of this process. Given the state of war, citizens must be informed about their rights and duties to avoid misunderstandings and legal consequences. The stance of MPs and experts points to a clear need for public information campaigns, which could help reduce anxiety and increase legal awareness among the population.
