Germany does not rule out sending troops to Ukraine: what they say in Berlin.
According to ТСН: Some politicians in Germany consider it appropriate to consider the participation of Bundeswehr troops in a future peacekeeping mission in Ukraine.
According to Spiegel, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has recently avoided answering this question, but the Social Democratic faction in parliament keeps it open. Deputies are discussing the possibility of Bundeswehr participation in supporting a potential peace agreement in Ukraine.
Position of German politicians
Chairwoman of the European Parliament's Defense Committee Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann is convinced that Berlin must clearly state its readiness for possible peacekeeping actions in Ukraine.
"Germany should, of course, participate in any possible peacekeeping operations; this must be clear to everyone," she noted.
At the same time, defense policy expert from the Christian Democratic Union Roderich Kiesewetter believes that such a scenario is only possible at a later stage.
"The question of ground troops will only arise after a ceasefire. Germany, as a self-proclaimed leading state, must not exclude anything in its public statements," said the politician.
In his opinion, the Federal Republic of Germany needs to create a coalition on a legally justified basis with "appropriate, i.e., broad, participation from Germany." Troops from coalition countries should also be open to contributions from third parties that support NATO and EU positions.
Peace agreement and military guarantees
The prerequisites for this discussion were the upcoming negotiations in Paris with the heads of state and government of countries supporting Ukraine regarding a possible peace agreement with the Russian Federation. A key element of the agreement is military guarantees from the West, which aim to deter Russia from new attacks on Ukraine.
"The meeting must send a clear signal that Europeans take their responsibilities seriously. This is also a clear signal that the U.S. government needs right now," noted Strack-Zimmermann.
She also added that "generals from participating states need to clarify what Bundeswehr forces can be provided." Various options are possible, including "ground troops and air defense; and possibly naval forces if Turkey provides access to the Black Sea."
"Many forms of Germany's participation in ensuring peace are possible," emphasized Strack-Zimmermann.
It is worth noting that according to WELT, Europe is ready to send troops to Ukraine. The total number of military personnel could reach up to 15 thousand. France and Great Britain are willing to participate in monitoring the ceasefire even without a mandate from the UN or the EU - an invitation from Ukraine is sufficient.
Against the backdrop of growing hopes for peace in the region, Germany's participation in peacekeeping missions could be an important step in stabilizing the situation in Ukraine. It seems that the international community is trying to activate the restoration of peace and security through concrete actions and commitments that will influence the further development of events in the region.
