Poland in Talks to Send Up to Nine MiG-29 Fighter Jets to Ukraine.
Poland Considers Transferring MiG-29 Fighter Jets
According to TSN.ua: Poland is negotiating to provide Ukraine with up to nine of its fourteen MiG-29 fighter jets. Polish Deputy Defense Minister Paweł Zalewski confirmed the discussions, stating that Kyiv has agreed in principle to accept the offer. The Polish General Staff had already confirmed talks with the Ukrainian side on December 10. This potential transfer represents a significant step in Poland's military support for its neighbor, which has been defending against a full-scale Russian invasion since February 2022.
Zalewski noted that 'we are awaiting a response from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense. The discussions are ongoing and are now entirely technical.' He specified the number of aircraft involved as 'fewer than ten.' However, Polish President Karol Nawrocki stated on December 11 that he had not been informed of any plans to transfer the jets. These developments highlight active efforts by Poland to collaborate with Ukraine on defense matters.
Potential Boost for Ukraine's Military Capability
The provision of MiG-29s could substantially enhance Ukraine's military potential in its ongoing conflict with Russia. It also signals Poland's growing commitment and readiness to assist Ukraine in strengthening its defensive capabilities. Poland has been a leading advocate for military aid to Ukraine within NATO and the European Union.
Should the negotiations conclude successfully, this move would mark a further deepening of military cooperation between the two nations.
