Famous Russian Sculptor Zurab Tsereteli Passed Away
At the age of 91, famous Russian sculptor of Georgian descent Zurab Tsereteli has passed away. This was reported by his assistant Sergei Shagulashvili in a comment to Interfax agency. He noted that Tsereteli died at nearly 1:30 AM.
Zurab Tsereteli was considered one of the most famous artists in the post-Soviet space. He created dozens of monumental projects in various countries around the world. His well-known works include a monument to Peter I and the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Russia, monuments in Georgia, as well as sculptures in the USA and Europe.
Since 1997 and until the end of his life, Tsereteli headed the Russian Academy of Arts.
In 2003, he was granted Russian citizenship for special merits.
Reaction to Accusations of Supporting Russia's Policies
In March 2014, Zurab Tsereteli, along with other Russian cultural figures, allegedly 'signed a letter' supporting the Russian president's position on military intervention in Ukraine, according to the Russian Ministry of Culture.
However, the artist's assistant, Sergei Shagulashvili, denied this statement, asserting that Tsereteli never signed any political documents and did not interfere in politics.
It is worth noting that people's deputy Volodymyr Moroz passed away at the age of 57.
