Over a Thousand Kyiv Buildings to Lack Heating for Rest of Winter.
Heating Crisis in Ukraine's Capital
According to Novyny.live: More than a thousand residential buildings in Kyiv's Dniprovskyi and Darnytskyi districts will remain without central heating for the remainder of the winter season. Kyiv City Military Administration spokesperson Kateryna Pop stated that this affects 1,126 buildings, which includes 62 schools and several preschool facilities. This situation highlights the ongoing infrastructural challenges faced by Ukrainian cities following widespread damage to energy systems.
Currently, approximately 110 buildings in the city are without a heat carrier due to damage to internal distribution networks. While heating was restored to 2,600 buildings damaged by shelling on February 17, 2023, the current damage in the aforementioned districts is too severe for immediate repair. Pop confirmed the impossibility of restoring service this season, stating: 'As you know, the unchanged figure remains 1,126 buildings in the Dniprovskyi and Darnytskyi districts. It is impossible to restore heating there before the end of this heating season.'
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko commented on the broader issue, noting that 'Kyiv cannot switch to local heat sources.' In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that 'decisions are already being prepared regarding the reconstruction and renewal of community energy supply.'
Future Outlook and Discussions
Consequently, residents in these areas must prepare for a prolonged lack of heat as the capital's heating situation remains severe. Discussions are ongoing about potential changes to the energy supply system, which may improve conditions for residents in the future.
It is also critical to monitor the local authorities' further decisions on providing heat to schools and educational institutions, as this is essential for the normal functioning of education in the capital.
