The Prisoner Exchange on August 14 — What's Special About It
According to information from the Coordination Headquarters, an exchange of 67 people took place today. 33 military personnel and 51 civilian Ukrainians returned from Russian captivity.
'The uniqueness of today’s exchange is that it succeeded in freeing both civilian and military Ukrainians who were detained in temporarily occupied territories even before the full-scale invasion and illegally sentenced to long prison terms — from 10 to 18 years. One of the released individuals had been in captivity for 4013 days — he was captured in Donetsk region back in 2014.'
Additionally, Ukrainians who were captured between 2016 and 2021 were also freed. Among them were women from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, including one primary school teacher. A young man was also released, who was only 18 years old at the time of his imprisonment.
The Ukrainian captives returned to their families after several years of imprisonment, including those who had been in captivity since before the full-scale invasion began. This release is considered a significant event for Ukraine and for the military and civilians who have suffered wrongful imprisonment in occupied territories.
