Argentinian President Milei gives concert amid economic crisis: what is wrong.
According to inkorr.com: Argentinian President Javier Milei, who recently promised to 'slash government spending with a chainsaw' and stop inflation, is now facing serious challenges due to the economic crisis. On Monday, the 54-year-old politician and former musician took to the stage at Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires, attempting to boost the spirits of his supporters. According to The Guardian, amid chants of 'Ole, Milei!' he performed nine songs in the style of the 1980s. However, offstage, he is surrounded by numerous scandals, growing discontent among the population, and the peso's value continues to fall.
Initially, shock economic therapy brought positive results: inflation decreased, and Western politicians began referring to Milei as an 'economic miracle.' Donald Trump offered his support with the slogan 'Make Argentina great again,' and British Conservatives took him as an example. However, this positive effect quickly dissipated.
Political Defeats of Javier Milei
The situation sharply deteriorated due to a series of scandals and political failures:
- In August, protesters threw stones at Milei over corruption accusations regarding his sister and the head of administration Karina Milei;
- In September, the president's party faced a crushing defeat in the Buenos Aires provincial elections;
- Close associate of Milei, Jose Luis Espert, withdrew his candidacy after being exposed for receiving 200 thousand dollars from a drug dealer.
Journalist Sebastian Lacunza believes the president is going through a crisis of trust.
'Support is dwindling due to corruption suspicions and severe cuts that have heavily impacted pensioners, hospitals, universities, and households,' he says.
Despite all the difficulties, Milei continues to put on a show. His fans in the hall admitted that the country is in a 'terrible state,' but urged them to wait until the end of his term. However, analysts do not share this optimism.
What Experts Say About the Situation in Argentina
Political scientist Paola Zuban notes that the president's current state can be characterized as 'economic, political, and social default.'
'He promised not only an economic revolution but also a moral one,' Zuban reminds. 'But scandals have destroyed that trust. Expectations have fallen, and now the government is facing a crisis that is hard to escape.'
Analyst Facundo Nejamkis adds:
'There is an ever-growing gap between the government's words and what people feel. They talked about a miracle, but no one sees it.'
The concert in Buenos Aires was supposed to restore Milei's popularity, but even his supporters admit that it was an extremely poor decision in circumstances where prices are rising and trust is declining daily.
In the current situation, Javier Milei faces serious challenges that test his leadership and strategic approach amid economic instability. His efforts to regain the population's trust may encounter significant difficulties unless effective solutions are found to restore economic and social stability.
