Poland's President Revokes Zelenskyy's Order, Citing a Breached 'Threshold of Pain'.
Stripping of the Order of the White Eagle
According to Novyny.live: Polish President Karol Nawrocki has explained his decision to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to Nawrocki, the move came after what he described as the 'threshold of pain' for Polish society regarding matters of historical memory had been crossed. He emphasized that, despite Poland's continued support for Ukraine, Poles hold their own perspectives on certain issues tied to their history.
The decision to strip Zelenskyy of the honor was made on June 20, during the observance of the National Day of the Silesian Uprisings. This action draws parallels to earlier instances of Ukrainian leaders refusing the same Polish award. For example, Viktor Yushchenko previously declined the Order of the White Eagle, stating:
“I view the order as a symbol of respect not only for an individual but for the entire Ukrainian people.” - Viktor Yushchenko
Former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma also expressed his dissatisfaction, declaring that 'this step is a matter of principle for me.' Additionally, Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine's intelligence service, refused the Golden Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit for Poland. These decisions highlight the complexity of Ukraine-Poland relations, particularly when it comes to historical memory and differing interpretations of the past.
The Fragile Nature of Ukraine-Poland Ties
The revocation of the Order of the White Eagle from Volodymyr Zelenskyy thus marks a significant moment in reflecting the sensitive historical memory issues that continue to shape bilateral relations. This episode underscores how fraught the relationship between Ukraine and Poland remains, given their shared yet often contentious history. Finding a balance between ongoing support and national interests remains a key challenge, one that could influence future diplomatic efforts between the two nations.
